Over the years, the St. Patrick’s Day celebration in Douglas has raised thousands of dollars for the Renfrew Victoria Hospital Foundation and resulted in many benefits for patients at RVH.

In the final fundraising auction at the Douglas Tavern in March 2021, a beautiful Irish quilt created by Kate Crozier, Cecie Whalen, Janice Forgie and Donna Barr was purchased by Bonnechere Excavating Inc. (BEI) for $4,300. BEI promptly donated the quilt to longtime tavern owners Evelyn and Terry McHale.

The money raised for the quilt was donated to the RVH Foundation and directed to the 3rd Floor Complex Continuing Care (CCC) Unit in recognition of two “very special” McHale family members who were patients there in recent years.

The money was used to give the unit a ‘homey’ feel and enhance patient safety at the same time with the installation of door wraps. The wraps camouflage exit and elevator doors to deter patients who have dementia from wandering out of the unit.

“Some of our patients who have dementia tend to wander, so disguising the doors will help to keep them safe, as well as make our unit feel more like home with images of bookcases, knick-knack shelves and fireplaces,” says Cindy Walker, Nurse Manager of the CCC unit.

“The doors wraps are exactly what we needed to support our wandering patients on this unit. It’s something we have wanted to do for our patients for a long time, in alignment with the patient and family-centred care we strive to pride and our RVH values,” adds Chris Ferguson, RVH VP of Patient Services. “We thank the McHales and all those who supported them and by extension RVH over the years.”
