Diabetes Education

The Diabetes Education program is located on the second floor above the Dialysis Unit at the back of the hospital or by calling (613) 432-4851 ext 162.

The RVH Diabetes Education Program provides information and support to people who have newly diagnosed or pre-existing diabetes whether it is pre-diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, Type 1 diabetes or gestational diabetes.

For those newly diagnosed or needing a refresher, we offer a small group diabetes class once per month. The class is delivered by our Certified Diabetes Educator Dietitian and Nurse.

The class is first Wednesday of the month from 9 a.m. until noon. You can register for the class by calling (613) 432-4851 ext 162.

The class covers:

  • What is Type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes
  • How to eat in a way that helps to keep blood glucose(sugar) in control
  • How to get more physical activity into your life
  • How and if you need to test your own blood glucose(sugar) at home
  • Coping with stress
  • What your blood test targets should be ( for most people this is an A1C of less than 7.0)

Individual appointments with the diabetes nurse or dietitian are also available if you have Type 1 diabetes, gestational diabetes or if you are having any trouble getting or keeping your diabetes well-managed.

We are a certified insulin pump center and able to fully support patients on pumps.

All diabetes programs in Renfrew County have access to an endocrinologist (diabetes specialist) using the Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN). If you are in need of a diabetes specialist, a referral is required and your visit will be arranged at the hospital closest to you.
